Anyone own a Kindle and live outside the US? Please tell me how you use it.?

by Kindle 3 on September 17, 2009

My wife and I are moving out of the US to Europe for my job and she would like to get a Kindle DX (that’s the larger, more expensive one) before we leave.

We’re wondering how it will work once outside of the US — we understand that the free wireless service will not be available, which leaves us with wired syncing.

Therefore I have a few questions:
- Can I load books and other content onto the device from a PC through a USB cord?
- How is content downloaded to my computer? I see on Amazon.com that they have a Kindle Books section but every book I look at says delivery is wireless. Since I won’t have wireless connectivity, how, then, is content delivered to the Kindle?

I feel like I’ve looked and looked and this information is not forthcoming anywhere I’ve looked.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Kindle#Content_sources indicates wired syncing is possible, but I would like to know more details about buying a Kindle and using it abroad.

We’re assuming that Kindle will not be available in Europe before long since they keep saying it’s coming and it doesn’t come because Amazon is having trouble getting deals with wireless operators.

Thank you for your help.

Yes, if you buy the Kindle DX when you’re in the U.S., you can have it work when you’re in Europe (all functions, other than Whispernet, will work). There is a very good discussion about using the Kindle outside the U.S. here:

So to answer your questions:
- You can load Kindle books or your own PDF files through USB to the Kindle, just by a drag and drop on your PC
- Guess you must have internet access when you’re in Europe, right? Just use your PC to go to Amazon website and login your account, and you’ll be able to download the Kindle books to your computer. See the above link for detail steps.

There is also a good article here talking about how to get the most out of the Kindle DX, see if you’re interested:

Hope this solves your problem.

You can have everything work in Europe for the Kindle. It won’t have internet access, but every other things will work. See here about using the Kindle in Canada (just the same as the case of Europe), especially the message from Chris J. Knappett sa:

I have the Kindle 2 and I like it very much. It brought me a lot of convenience. I’ve been seriously considering to upgrade to the Kindle DX, however. This is the review of the Kindle DX that I’ve read:

Hope this helps.
