Yes, you can have some textbooks with the Sony Reader. But there will be more textbooks selections on the Kindle. I’ve mentioned quite a lot on this here:

I also suggest you to read this review from a top reviewer who is also a book lover, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the Kindle and also why it is worth especially at the end of the review:

BTW, there are some websites like these two, where you can find more than ten thousand free books for the Kindle. So no need to go to library to borrow them, you can actually own them:

Hope this helps.
Yes, you should be able to find some textbooks on it. However, there will be more textbooks on the Amazon Kindle. Here are the textbooks that you can put on it:

I love my Kindle 2 very much. I’m not sure if it helps, but between the Kindle and the Sony Reader, I’ll suggest you to go for the Kindle instead of Sony. The Kindle is better because it has free wireless and text-to-speech function. There are more ebooks you can find available for the Kindle, and books on the Kindle are quite a lot cheaper too. There are some good comparison between them here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR3ULAFVHBGYVQP%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

And I’ll say if you like reading then you’ll like the Kindle, because getting books on it is cheaper than reading actual books.
And in case you don’t know, Amazon has recently put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it adds in international wireless access and native PDF support… So take the chance if you want it.
Hope it helps
You can get thousands of digital textbooks through Textbooks.com. They work with Adobe Digital Editions, so you could download them and read them on your computer as well your Sony Reader. They won’t work for a Kindle though.
