Yes, Kindle DX is a suitable device for such books. It does not support CHM format, but you can convert the file to PDF first. Some tools like this one can help:

There are some very good comparisons between the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX here:

To my knowledge Amazon does not support this format, but you may be able to convert it for your purposes. When I googled conversion there were sites that both would convert to html or pdf. If you’re going to read medical texts I would go with the DX. Honestly though, if I were you I’d wait for apples new tablet first and see what it looked like. I know e-ink is great for novels, but I can’t imagine trying to read medical texts in black and white personally. I love my kindle, but I refuse to even buy my accounting text books on it since the graphics are hard enough to make out.

I dont think the kindle supports the CHM book format. With the launch of the Kindle eBook reader, Amazon.com created the AZW format. It has its proprietary format.

No ebook reader can support CHM. You can see what file formats are supported by the Amazon Kindle from "Files Kindle Recognizes" section on the official page here:

I agree that the Kindle DX is the right device for your purpose.
