The Sony EBook reader has an advantage in that it can handle PDF and DOC files, while the Amazon Kindle only handles its own proprietary format. You can upload your own files and free files from the Internet. It’s on Amazon for $279. You can also get it cheaper if there’s a Sony Factory outlet near you.

The Kindle has a better screen and is easier to read. It also has access to EVDO broadband wireless Internet for downloads and reading Wikipedia, so you don’t need a PC to get new content. It’s only available from Amazon for $359.

Which would I buy? Neither. I would can get the Asus EEE PC for $299. This is a 7-inch color screen laptop that runs Linux and has word processing and spreadsheet and Internet and wireless and games and other features. It comes with a PDF reader, so you could easily read your Ebooks with this and use it for lots more, if you wanted.

If you’re not comfortable with that, then I would advise checking out the lists of titles available for purchase and see how much each would cost in the long term and whether either has the books available that you would be likely to buy.
